Paul Reck Reports on Grand Banks 32 “Willie”

Ship modeler and lead volunteer Paul Reck reported today that the model of the Corinthian Yacht Club’s committee boat is nearly complete and sent along a couple photos. The boat is a Grand Banks 32 that he scratch-built with the assistance Tom Shea. The 1/16-scale model has appeared at various stages of construction over the past several Hyde Street Pier ship model meetings.

First HSPMS Meeting of the Year

Saturday, January 17 marks the first meeting of the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights for 2015. It’s a new year and a great time to get those ship model projects out and to recommit ourselves to support the club and the park service by spending a little time at our workshop aboard the Eureka. Meeting starts at 9:30am.

Tom Shea and Paul Reck deserve some thanks for having done some house cleaning in the workshop so members have more room to work on their builds. So, come and take advantage of the new space and see what everyone is working on.

Last of the Kriegstein Collection Books – Get Yours Quick!

Ship Modeler

If you’ve never seen the Kriegstein Collection or part of it, you’re really missing a rare sight. I was fortunately to be able to visit the home of Dr. Arnold Kriegstein with the members of the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights group a few years ago.

I had attended the Nautical Research Guild Conference in San Francisco (well, actually, it was in San Mateo) where Dr. Kriegstein gave a presentation. The NRG event included a tour of his home, which I had missed. So one of the other Hyde Street Pier members and I approached Dr. Kriegstein about organizing a separate visit at some time, which he was completely open to. So, we went about organizing a date for our group some months later and visited his home, which is just North of San Francisco.

I won’t go into a…

For several months over the Summer, the Eureka was closed for repairs, so it’s nice to be “home” again and everyone seems to agree – last few months we’ve had great turnouts at our meetings. This will be the final meeting of the year, so we hope to see everyone’s smiling faces again, AND their models, at the meeting.

Guests are always welcome, so please don’t hesitate to come if you’re interested. But, don’t be surprised if we convince to you join us!

Sad News – Hobby Mill is closing down

Ship Modeler

Those of us who have been lucky enough to know about this gem of a service, know that Jeff Hayes has been providing beautifully milled wood to the ship modeling community for many years. I’ve relied on Jeff for supplying strip woods for a number of my projects, and also for supplying wood sets that I’ve purchased from Admiralty Models for their Echo Cross Section project.

It was just announced by Jeff today that he will be shutting down Hobby Mill. With other businesses, shutting down often means that business hasn’t been good enough to support the operation. In the case of Hobby Mill, it’s more about being too successful and of Jeff not having enough time to enjoy life and to build his own ship models. So, like Warner Woods West, who was once a great supplier of strip woods for ship modelers. This is sad news for ship…

2014 NRG Conference in St. Louis, MO, Oct 16-18

Ship Modeler

Next week is the Nautical Research Guild conference. It’s in St. Louis this year and I actually get to go. This will be only the second NRG conference I’ve attended. My first was the one held in the San Francisco Bay Area back in 2011, I think it was. I only made it to that one because it was local. The one in St. Louis will be my first one that’s out of the area, as most of them are. However, I managed to get the trip paid for by the ship model distributor and store Ages of Sail.

As I’ve mentioned before here, I’ve been doing some work helping them out as they’re right down the road in the East Bay in San Lorenzo, CA. I basically told the owner I’d be willing to help him out with the business if he sends me to the conference. He agreed…
